CHAPTER 20

THE CLASP

Perry dove for the ground, hauling Sergio down with him.

The metal ball caromed off the domed ceiling of the tunnel and bounced in an unnatural fashion—more like it was made of rubber than metal—but at that point Perry decided to bury his face in his arms and he saw nothing else but darkness and shadowed tunnel floor, and he heard nothing but the huff of his breath.

Then there was light.

The shockwave rammed into him, like running into a wall at a dead sprint. Someone cried out. Perry’s ears rang like gongs.

He got up unsteadily, only aware of the fact that he should be moving and not lying there. His woozy vision panned to his left. Stuber was hauling himself off the floor, teeth bared, and Perry couldn’t tell whether he was grimacing or grinning—probably a bit of both.

Sergio got up much slower than Perry. Perry grabbed him and pulled him to his feet.

There was another body. It was Dino, although you wouldn’t recognize that anymore. He had been the closest one to the blast, and he’d soaked up the brunt of the shrapnel.

“Well, they know we’re down here now!” Stuber hollered. He ran ten steps, reaching out to grab Perry by the sleeve and haul him along. Perry kept his grip on Sergio, creating a human chain.

Stuber whipped them like he was trying to send them scuttling down the tunnel, and he spun on a foot and raised his Roq-11 and let it spit fire down the hall.

Perry kept running. He wanted to fight, but a weaponless man in a gunfight is just another body at the end of the day. So he ran, towing Sergio behind him like an uncooperative trailer with a busted wheel.

“Come on, Uncle Sergio!” Perry gasped.

“I’m trying,” Sergio wheezed.

They got fifty yards further into the tunnel before Perry had to stop. Sergio had become dead weight. He whirled on his so-called uncle, angry again.

“What are you doing?” Perry demanded.

He noticed that he couldn’t see Stuber.

Further down the tunnel, there were bright flashes and pumping rifle reports.

Sergio was bent double. Hands on his knees. He craned his neck to look at Perry, his mouth hanging open.

There was blood on his lips. It dribbled out of his open mouth in a thin stream.

Perry’s anger dissipated again. Replaced by panic.

Perry seized Sergio by the shoulders and hauled him upright, supporting his weight now. Sergio sagged in his arms, his head lolling as he worked for air. Perry scoured the old man’s body and saw that the wound wasn’t hard to find. The entire front of his tunic, from the mid-point of his belly and down to his knees was soaked in dark red that was almost black.

“Oh, shit!” Perry stammered. “What do you need?”

“They got me,” Sergio mumbled. “The grenade got me.”

“Don’t…” Perry didn’t finish. “Let me see it.”

The two of them hobbled to the wall of the tunnel.

Down the tunnel, the firefight drew closer.

Perry eased Sergio down into a sitting position against the wall, and then he ripped the old man’s tunic up, and struggled not to show what he saw on his face.
